I recently received a photo copy of my great grandfathers Masters
Certificate of Competency awarded in June 1859.
Stamped onto the Certificate was the following:
Marine Department Board of Trade Certified that a Binocular Glass was
PRESENTED BY the French GOVERNMNT to John Sutherby for Services to
Shipwrecked Seaman of "Eclaireur" on the 10 Sepr 1888.
Could anybody enlighten me as to what "services" John Sutherby undertook re
the Eclaireur

From Lloyd's List newspaper 17 Sep 1888:
"Havre 14 Sep: The sloop ECLAIREUR of Treguier from Le Havre with petroleum
has been towed to Trouville bottom up by the steamer TYNE, from Trouville
for Swansea; crew saved."
