Dear Peter and Margaret
Franklin is a very small town on the banks of the Huon River with a
population of less than a thousand. The Huon Valley itself is magnificent
but I think you will be disappointed if you are expecting a nautical theme
there. The area's economy is based on the timber industry and apple
orchards, both on a scale much reduced in recent years. Tourism is probably
the most important industry now. The town itself is, well, scrubby, to put
it nicely. It is only about 50 minutes from Hobart and apart from a couple
of basic pubs, there are few B&B's in the area. Hounville is the largest
town but it is really just a small commercial and residential community
I recommend you stay in Hobart but you must drive down the Huon to Dover.
It's quite magnificent with the river and mountains.
The Tasmanian Maritime Museum in Hobart will be the place you should
concentrate on. Follow this link http://www.maritimetas.org/ and also the
Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery at http://www.tmag.tas.gov.au/
I would contact the TMM before you go so that they could see if they have
material on your ancestor of his vessels. I would not be surprised.
I used to live in Geeveston, the next town along the Huon. There was a paper
pulp mill there until the mid 80's. I am not aware of a Museum anywhere in
the Huon and last visited in March this year. Tasmania is incredibly
beautiful and the locals really know how to take care of tourists - even
Kiwis. Enjoy your trip.
Regards, Peter in Melbourne

> We are planning a trip to Tasmania in November this year and hope to visit
the area where our ancestor built two ships c 1855 on the Huon River at
Franklin. The vessels are the " PRYDE " Official Number 32,090, owner,
builder and captain was Capt. Simon SAUNDERS. The second vessel was the "
HUON " Official number 41,468. Again the owner, builder and captain was
Capt. Simon SAUNDERS. Could SKS advise if it there is any trace of the
shipbuilding industry remaining in this area, Nautical Museums, Historical
Societies etc. Many thanks, Peter and Margaret in Auckland NZ.
