The Butler deed shows the land sold for $1. That might mean a family
connection. You should research the Butlers.

Subject: [MOJEFFER] Nowland/Noland/Knowland 1820's Part I
> I am new to the List. I have browsed through and searched the archives
and haven't found any information on my ancestors. I have posted this query
to Rootsweb's Missouri Jefferson County Message Board in the past so you may
have seen it there.
>
> My research in Jefferson County is in the very early days of Jefferson
County area - 1813-1823ish and a little beyond that. I am going to outline
my research and see if anyone has any suggestions of where and with what
resources to do further research on this family. I am at a BIG BRICK WALL
on this one. I have tried to track down the various branches of descendants
to living relatives but what little success I have had has not yielded more
information about the Nowland line.
>
> I visited Jefferson County for a couple of days in 1999. I did Land
Record research at the Jefferson County Court House. I visited the College
and went through the Probate Records. These two places are where most of my
information has come from on this family. I also visited the Library at
High Point although I only got to spend a couple of hours there as we needed
to be on our way home and didn't find any helpful information.
>
> I am looking for information about my 4 Greats Grandfather and family -
John Nowland (Noland/Knowland) and family - who lived in Jefferson County
Missouri in 1821-22 and probably earlier; their children were there on in to
the 1830s and 1840s with one child - my 3 Greats Grandfather John W.
Nowland - moving on to Carroll County, Missouri while the rest of the
children went to Wisconsin. His wife was Patsey (per Probate Records). They
died within months of each other in 1822, Patsey about 21 Aug and John by 31
Dec; my guess is they were born about 1794 so it must have been illness
which took them. They were cared for by doctors for several months; epidemic
lists say "the fever" swept Nationwide from 1820-1823 so I don't know if
that was their cause of death or not. I have no idea where they are buried
or if there are/were headstones; I didn't see anything in the Probate Record
about a bill for headstones or coffins.
>
> They had five children who were all minors when John & Patsey died: (1)
John W. Nowland (1813-1898), (2) Charlotte Nowland (1816-1857), (3) Lucinda
(1819-?), (4) Washington Nowland/Noland (1821-1910), and (5) Samuel (died
young) - and maybe a sixth child. All of the children always said they
were born in Missouri - I assume then in Jefferson County but don't know for
sure. John W. Nowland stated on the 1880 Census that his Father, John-4,
was born in Vermont. I have found some Nowland records there in Bennington
County but have not proven any connections yet. Assuming that is true, the
family would have come to Missouri from Vermont by 1813.

> (1) John W. Nowland is my 3G Grandfather. Around 1839 he moved to his
1/5th share of land that his Father, John, owned in Carroll County, Missouri
(which he bought in 1819 from Peter Dowling & wife Sarah of Jefferson
County - it had been his military bounty land; I don't think John ever lived
in Carroll County himself). He settled there, married Minerva Hardwick 31
Oct 1839, and raised his family. My Grandfather and Father were born in
Carroll County. (2) Charlotte Nowland went to Wisconsin and married
Crawford Million. (3) Lucinda Nowland married Amos Harris and moved to
Wisconsin also. Charlotte Nowland Million died and Lucinda (divorced but I
don't know when) and Charlotte's husband, Crawford Million, married. (4)
Washington Noland (he spelled it this way beginning in Missouri) was an
attorney in Missouri but went to Wisconsin to become a lead miner. Before
leaving Jefferson County Missouri he married Missouri Wilcox on 11 Dec 1844.
They had five children: Cora, James, !

> John Nowland (4 Greats Grandfather) owned land in Jefferson County,
Missouri along the Plattin Creek and the Isle de Bois per land records that
I have found. I don't know which piece(s) the family actually lived on when
John and Patsey died. The pieces were:
>
> 6 Feb 1821 bought land Jefferson Co, MO; Plattin Twp from John Eaglebarger
and wife Unity formerly Jessy Dowling's on the West Side of Plattin Creek
beginning at the south west corner of the aforesaid tract thence east to the
Plattin Creek thence down the said creek with its meanders, thence north and
west - quantity of 200 acres; John W. Nowland sold 1/5th part to Abraham
Wilcox on 10 Oct 1836; Charlotte Nowland Million and husband Crawford
Million sold 1/5th part to Samuel Skeel on 23 Dec 1844; Lucinda Harris and
husband Amos sold 1/5th part to Abram Wilcox on 1 Nov 1844.
>
> 15 Feb 1821 Says he is of Jefferson County Plattin Twp; bought land
Jefferson Co, MO; from Elijah Butler and wife Deborah lying on the Isle a
Bois Creek beginning at the north west corner of said tract, thence in a
north east direction with the land claimed by Samuel Bartlett to the said
creek thence down the said creek with the meanders thereof to land claimed
by William Harris, thence with the boundary being of said Harris North west
to the sectional line of said tract, thence to the ___ of beginning to be
the same more or less; after John Nowland's death John W. Nowland sold 1/5th
part to Henry Bailey on 11 Nov 1837.
>
> I don't know exactly where that places these two pieces of land in
Jefferson County, Plattin Twp; I don't know if the second piece of land is
in Plattin Twp or not. Logically it would seem that John and Patsey Nowland
would have been buried somewhere nearby as, to my knowledge, they didn't
have family in the area so there would not have been an "established" place.
I don't know what all cemeteries are in Plattin Township and if there are
transcriptions of those cemeteries. I doubt there are headstones for John
and Patsey Nowland or son Samuel Nowland but if anyone knows where they or
other Nowlands are buried in Jefferson County please let me know.
>
> I don't have a clue as to Patsey's maiden name and figure that Patsey is,
of course, a nickname. Also I don't know where they were married - Missouri
or Vermont if, indeed they came from Vermont, or if John met and married her
somewhere on his way to Missouri.
>
> Guardians of the minor children of John and Patsey Nowland were: Nancy
Brimbery (Mrs. John): Care of infant Washington Nowland; Samuel Nowland:
Care of infants John, Charlotte, and Lucinda Nowland. Then as the children
got older: John W. Deniston (Charlotte & Lucinda); Robert Jamison/Jameson:
John Nowland; James Thomas: Washington Nowland; and John Geiger: Samuel
Nowland (until his death).
>
> According to inventory of John Nowland's estate on 31 Dec 1822, those who
owed him money were: Samuel B. May $26.00; A. Sherile (sp?) $19.87; John
James $93.40; Robert Jameson $12.00; Henry Stewart $11.00; Henry Hendrecky
(sp?) $22.25; Richard Woodson $11.00; William Hampton $60.00; O.A. Bellknap
$8.00; James Scott $20.00; William Bartlett $8.00; James Wilcox $14.00;
James McCormick $20.00; Daniel Bartlett $10.00; Henry Hendricks $5.12;
Illinois State Paper $26.00. Total $533.02. John Nowland didn't seem to
owe anybody other than caregivers during his and his wife's illness and
William Harris who apparently owned the General Store or whatever it was
called; the list of things owed him for were domestic goods and food for a
total of $66.635. I don't know what relation he is to Lucinda's husband,
Amos Harris.
>
> If anybody knows anything about this family, please let me know. I have
been in touch with a couple of Charlotte (Nowland) & Crawford Million's
descendants. They had information on the Million Family but not on the
Nowland family.
>
> NOTE: I did come across all the records for Randolph Nolan/Noland in
Jefferson County about that time period. I have not found a way to tie him
to my family.
