My husband was in the Navy after the Korean War. He was in from 1956 to
1960. The last carrier he was on was the Independence. That thing was huge! I
cried when I saw it for the first time. They could play nine holes of golf
on the top deck. We had a tour through it and I couldn't believe it. It was
the size of a small city. It was the last carrier built before nuclear
power was added. Sharon K.

I remember them saying about the deck of the enterprise was made of wood
from Washington State. That is where my brother was born. Of course after ww2
then your husband would have been in during Korea. My husband was on a
destroyer. But he got out in 50.
I remember my brother saying that deck never got any bigger with the
landings always looked to small. Of course he was looking the other way, being the
rear gunner. They have the Midway birthed in San Diego, a museum. It came
out after the war in is bigger than the Enterprise. I want to see it when we go
down. I am hoping they will have some of the old aircraft on it. Of course
there might not be any of the Douglas Dauntless that he flew in left. I guess
I am getting old and it is the going back in time for me.
