My husband grew up in Pasadena (from the age of 8 on anyway), and his family
always had wonderful seats at the Rose Parade. My father-in-law was a citrus
packing house manager (Sierra Madre Lamanda Citrus Association). They had
flat bed trucks for carrying the oranges in boxes. (They used to be wrapped
in tissue paper and packed in wooden boxes.) Through Rotary International,
my father-in-law was good friends with the manager of the Coca Cola bottling
company on Colorado Avenue, a major part of the parade route. There was
enough room between the bottling company building and the sidewalk to drive
about 5 flatbed trucks in and park them. Then the packing house would supply
enough boxes to stack them in tiers above the crowd. Between the two
families, a lot of people got to see the whole parade every single year.
