I remember working for the State of CA back in the 60's, I was in charge of
a secretarial pool....these gals could type like I couldn't believe. I did
fine, but they were typing 100 wpm....I did good at 80 or 90. One little
Italian gal, Rose Coletti she would turn her head sideways as she only saw well
out of one eye, so it was a h oot watching her fingers fly over the key board,
with that cocked head. She was so tiny....bet she wasn't 5 feet tall, one
of the other gals had never been married and was a typical "old maid" type.
She so disapproved of those of us young, wearing short skirts, slacks were
just becoming the thing to wear, she hated those. They were a great group of
gals...worked hard and were fun at times. I hated being so young and in
charge....I didn't feel I really deserved it.
One thing comes to mind was typing letters for the Governor's signature, 13
tissues, using carbon paper. Each tissue a different color. Each type
stroke had to be the same pressure as all the others, no smears, no erasures,
absolutely perfect or it would be sent back with a nasty note. And oh yes the
carbon on our clothes...yuk! We were not allowed to use whiteout for
anything.....
I think computers are the best thing in the world for those who need
flawless work. They spell check, check grammar, format, insert, change test size,
color, fonts, everything. They are a God send...secretaries or whatever they
call them today....must be in heaven.
Regarding Onion Skin, I always loved the feel of it, loved the way ink
looked on it, but I don't remember a smell....hmmmmm! Hugs Pat
