I was in High School and they called for an assembly. At our High School, we didn't have an auditorium, so our assemblies were held on the football field, with us sitting in the stadium. I can't remember the details, I don't know if they already knew he was dead, or someone came across the field to tell the person in charge. I faintly remember seeing someone walking across the field, but that could have been another time.
But, that's how I learned FDR had died.
I'm like several of you, I try to vote in each election, definitely for the president, but even in local issues as well. I like to get my 2 cents in, then I have the right to complain if the other person doesn't do right. <g>
I'm sure you know by now Oregon has mail-in voting. Our ballots are mailed out to us, about 2 or 3 weeks before the due date, we vote, then mail our ballots back in to the election bureau. When we mark our ballots, they are put inside a secrecy envelope. Then, that envelope is put inside another envelope, that we sign on the outside, then mail all of that back to the bureau. The people there match our signatures against the records they have, then take our secrecy envelope out and discard the outer envelope. So, when all the ballots are taken out of the secrecy envelopes, they don't know who that ballot belongs to, and we have voted anonmously (I know that isn't spelled right). I was already voting by absentee ballot since I worked at one of the precincts. I miss not having an actual booth to go inside. That made it feel more like you had voted.

I voted my first time for FDR when he was elected to his 3rd term. He
died of course in April 1941 without fulfilling it.
Before I could vote I had to pay a 25 cents poll tax.
I don't recall not voting in every election since then, both National
and local.
