In our wee town of less than 4,000 there was always a picnic in the nearby
mountains, cool streams, lots of fishing, kids running around with one pitted
ripe (brown) olive on fingers to eat when they wish. Then during the meal,
there were always more ripe olives for the adults, ahha Usually potato salad,
cole slaw, fried chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, home made pickles, fresh tomato
and cucumber salad, so much food.
Kids had kool aid, adults, well, not sure, some beer, but perhaps they were
drinking kool aid also, don't remember any booze. My Aunt always made some
sort of yummy dessert, cake, or pies.
The kids ran everywhere they went, scampering like small ants. In the
evening, as it cooled off, we'd head back into the valley, and drive out to the
airport to watch the wonderful fireworks with the volunteer fire dept in charge.
We'd enjoy the popcorn we brought, and probably more kool aid. Kids would be
found with colored hands from pouring kool aid powder in our hands and then
licking them. Hate to think if the hands were washed first, haha No one was
allowed to fire off fireworks in town, as being the high desert things were dry
and would spark easily. Everyone was really good about not doing illegal
fireworks, I think peer pressure worked better those days, or perhaps people cared
more. I remember a couple of times, a plane from the closest air base would
do a fly over, oh was that exciting, not sure what the hard deck was, but we
would all be so thrilled. Not sure what time we'd ever get to bed as kids, it
was such an exciting time.
