My husband and I went to Tahlequah, Oklahoma today.
http://www.tahlequahchamber.com/visitors.asp
For those of you that aren't familiar with it, Tahlequah is the capital of
the Cherokee Nation. It was made the capital in 1839. It is located in the
Cookson Hills area of Oklahoma.
Tahlequah (Towel a qaw) is about a two hour drive from our home. Only 85
miles, but it is all beautiful two lane roads following the Illinois River
as it winds its way through eastern Oklahoma.
Tahlequah is the centerpiece of Oklahoma's "Green Country". The town
reflects the flavor of its early days and the native spirit that has made it
strong and proud. The native Cherokee language is displayed on street signs
and storefronts.
We had business at the offices of the Cherokee Nation. My husband is a
Cherokee, registered, card carrying. The license plates on our cars read
that we live in the Cherokee Nation.
It was my first visit to the Tribal Headquarters. I must say I was
impressed. After we finished our business we had a nice lunch. Then we
went to do my favorite thing. Look at old buildings.
It was a nice, cool, day in Oklahoma. We visited the Old Cherokee National
Capitol Building, it was built and occupied in 1870. After statehood in
1907 it served as the Cherokee County Courthouse until the present
courthouse was built and occupied. It was returned to the Cherokee Nation
in 1997. It is a really pretty courthouse square. Beautiful really old
Magnolias and Oaks. The first telephone installed west of the Mississippi
outside the St Louis area was installed in the Court House square.
The Chamber of Commerce is located across from the Courthouse Square in an
old, very nice, old post office building.
We drove around and checked out some of the other buildings in the area. I
plan to return for research in the Cherokee Archives located in Tahlequah.
I will let you know when I plan to drive down alone. My family hates
research trips. But the town does have enough to do that my daughter would
probably stay busy doing her favorite thing shopping.
I included the web site for the Chamber of Commerce at the top of this.
Visit it. The area surrounding Tahlequah is full of beautiful campgrounds
and cabins.
Tahlequah is north of Interstate 40, about 45 miles north of the Webbers
Falls exit. This route takes you north along the Arkansas River.
You may remember Webbers Falls from the bridge collapse on Memorial Day
weekend in 2002. A monument was just dedicated to the victims of the
collapse this past Memorial Day.
If you are at all interested in Native American research there is a center
devoted to it in Tahlequah. It is part of the Cherokee Nation History
Center.
We came home to my new puppy, Millie, she was great. Hadn't tore up
anything. First time we have left her alone in the house. For 11 weeks old
she is doing great. For those that don't know Millie is a German Shepherd.

Remember what your elders used to say, "Birds of a feather flock together."
If you're an eagle, don't hang around chickens: Chickens Can't Fly!
You can't soar with the Eagles if you hoot with the hoot owls.
