I believe that the lifespan of people back then was considerably less than
now, so at 62 years in, say, 1950, people were considered very old. Now, of
course (50 years later), since the average lifespan has been extended to
well over 70, you're not really considered seriously old until then. And
people just know how to take care of themselves; there's a lot of medical
knowledge about healthy living that just didn't exist back then. There was a
great deal of ignorance about health risks like smoking, heart disease, and
cancer 60 years ago. For instance, nobody told my father, "Don't smoke,
because of that asbestos you worked with in the shipyards." No... because
NOBODY KNEW IT. So when he died of lung cancer probably linked with
asbestos, nobody knew of the link until several years later. The medical
field is growing in knowledge so quickly, it's scary. But we're living
longer & longer because of it.

What I am amazed at is to watch Mickey Rooney play Andy Hardy at 18... he
looks (with his suit & tie) much older, much more mature! Look at kids
playing 18-year-old characters in the movies today: young punks.

Hope I've contributed something here.
