My first James McCracken in America was finally found in the 1790 census for
Union County, South Carolina spelled McKrakken. He was in the Revolutionary
War by at least 1775. Even though his will started out as "I James McCracken"
it was signed "James McGraban" but with a mark.
A number of early settlers to South Carolina in the 1760s came as "Poor
Protestants" with their passage paid and a promise of land. Some of these were
probably McCrackens with names such as McCrachan, McCrahen, McCadam, and
McGraban.
