Dear Mr. McCracken:
I do have my Norton Updates current, and I'm fanatic about it. I also keep
up-to-date with all the patches and updates from Microsoft, and I check for
new downloads from them twice a week. In addition, my
server has a large firewall, too. My filters are set at a very high level,
just enough so that I can still handle
my online banking, but blocking anything else. Yet, from time to time, some
malignant hacker figures
out a new way to beat all the safeguards, and piggyback a virus onto
innocent messages from people
with which you or I wish to correspond. I have the feeling that if these
dodos put half as much effort
into hiring out as ANTI-hackers, they could all be millionaires, very
shortly! I live in rural Nevada, and
even here, our entire network is being slowed down because not all our
server's customers take the
appropriate safeguards, or know how to.
After I sent you that first warning message, I received one more of the
virus-laden messages, and took
the steps shown below to get rid of it.
My son lives in San Francisco, is very intelligent with computers himself,
and managed to track one virus
back to Taiwan! He said he WISHED he knew how to hack, so he could FLAME the
+_)(*&^%$#@
person! My son is good enough that he built his first computer from garage
sales. Of course, in Silicon
Valley, during its heyday, people with money were updating their computers
as fast as new iterations
of technology were coming out. So he got some pretty incredible bargains
along the way. Eventually
he was able to purchase a brand new IBM computer, and now does a small
business from home and
calls it "Rent-a-Geek!" (The McCracken line is rich with people who have a
great sense of humor!)
But, the San Francisco-Silicon Valley areas are some of the most
heavily-hacked areas in America,
next to the Pentagon and Secret Services, and he has had to duel with a
virus or two. I have called, in
all innocence once or twice, and had him pick up the phone and snarl "WHAT?"
This is not like his
usual self, so lately, I just calmly say, "Hi, It's Mom - got another one,
huh?"
But he is the one who taught me much of how to protect myself. And when I
saw the two messages
in just a short time, both from the MCCRACKEN page, I knew that some
malignant, unprintable
guy had nailed the web site, and sent out the warning only to provide help
to others, if possible.
No harm was intended, nor was criticism. By the way, my antivirus scans my
messages, both incoming
and outgoing, so maybe the electronic hash I see when I know it is a virus,
is Norton's way to obscure
the actual nasty message. Nonetheless, it is unnerving to see that.
Thanks for your kindness and patience, and I hope somebody develops the
Mount Everest of all anti-
hack software, sometime. It would make social interactions over the internet
SO much more fun.
Not to mention what the cost of fighting the bloody things does to business.
Best wishes, Penny McCracken.
