Hi, Donna,
I looked in the 1993 edition of the Lutheran Annual which lists all
of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod churches. There is not a current
LC-MS church in Herman, WI. Both the ELCA and the Wisconsin Synod also have
annuals. You could look up the telephone number of a local church and call
the office. I have found the staff very helpful.
Or you could use www.switchboard.com or any other online directory
to look up churches in Herman, WI. At switchboard, enter "churches" in
business category and Herman & WI for the locality. You may have to choose
again for the business category.
Remember that some German evangelical churches also are in the
United Church of Christ now so don't ignore those if there are any in
Herman. I have then called the churches and asked if it is old enough for
the years for which I am looking. If not, then you might ask for any
suggestions for an older church in the area.
Some of the oldest records for an older congregation might be in the
local or national church archives. However, the church in Herman should
know where their records are archived if off site. Concordia Historical
Institute in St. Louis has many.
Many American church records are available on microfilm from the LDS
at your local branch. Check out their catalog at www.familysearch.org
Since you know that Heinrich (Henry John) MAYER was confirmed there
5 May 1853, do you have the certificate itself? The church name if probably
on it. If so, it may have to be translated into English. For example, my
grandfather's certificate said Gnaden evangelische Kirche which is now Grace
Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.
Have fun on your treasure hunt, Karen Grossart
