Occasionally, the vicarage occurs after the final year of studies and, if
satisfactory, results in a call to the congregation in which he served his
vicarage.
This is more common these days when pastoral candidates often already have
an established family, with school-aged children and the seminary may agree
to the delayed vicarage so that the children's schooling is not disrupted
three years in a row -- the year of the vicarage, the year of return to the
seminary and the year of the call.
The position still is one of "student pastor," however, and takes place
before the diploma is issued. Ordination does not take place until after a
call has been accepted and often takes place at the congregation of the
first call. I forget the reason for this for sure, but I believe it is one
of the devices designed to prevent our church from ordaining men who never
do take a call.
