Subject: Delaware Marriages - MAXWELL, Amos C & DAVIS, Annie E.

Eva,

Im assuming from what I have been reading, you have access to something with
marriages in Delaware.

Im looking for the marriage of Amos C. MAXWELL and Annie E. DAVIS. Since
their first child was born in 1880 I am assuming they were married prior to her
birth. However, in 1880, she was enumerated in Wilmington, Delaware with their
first child Sadie as married. Amos was enumerated with the RUTH family as a
worker there, but listed as Single. I realize this could be the error of an
enumerator or anyone on the RUTH family farm. I am assuming (I hate to keep
using that word) that Amos lived at the farm while working and went home on the
weekends????.

Annie was using the MAXWELL name in 1880 according to the census. They had at
least 8 children, maybe 9.( I only say this because on the birth records I
found, they are misnumbered, and in addition, two of the children have the
same birth number, and are not twins. So someone got it mixed up or there was at
least a still birth, miscarriage or something to occur to account for the
mix up in birth order numbers. Or just human error.

I know of 8 of their childre. I dont have birth records for Sadie,
Hattie, Walter or Harvey, but do for Joseph S, Naomi, Rachel, & Elsie. My guess is
that since there were no birth records at the Archives in Delaware, either
they were born possibly in MD (Annie appears to have been born there (on some
records it says she was born MD and some DE) and she may have went to be with
her Mom to give birth to their children if Amos was working away from home)
or no records were required to be kept at that time. I have Baptismal record
for Hattie (my gr grandmother) which she used as proof of birth for Social
Security. This seems to indicate that Hattie could find no record of her birth
either.

I have never found a marriage date for Amos C.MAXWELL & Annie E. DAVIS.Annie
died either in 1889 sometime after her last child was born and mid 1900 when
Census was taken for 1900 as Amos was a Widower at that point. The
Wilmington City Directory shows her living with Amos in 1900 but that directory would
have been compiled at least months before it came out in 1900. I found a
later marriage for Amos C. MAXWELL to Ida RITCHIE (his 2nd wife) he is buried
with her.

So, as I said I have never found a marriage record for Amos C. MAXWELL &
Annie E. DAVIS, but I also have no idea of her date of death or cause (could
even had been in childbirth), or a location of where she was buried. Amos is
buried with Ida in Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, De. I have the information
but have not found the grave. Riverview has been promising to hlep me locate
it for over a year. I dont expect to find it at this point.

If you have any information on this marriage I would appreciate your help.
Please let me know what dates you may have access to for marriages. I have
included her approximate death date in the hopes you might have access to some
records that would help me.

I also went through most of the newspapers for the year after her last
child's birth (mid 1889 to mid 1900) looking for an obit at the Morris Library
at the U of D. I didnt find that either. She seems to have just disappeared.
Their daughter Rachel MAXWELL was not on the 1900 census either. I cannot find
death record for her either. Rachel would have been 6 years old in 1900.

I dont know how your time is and dont want to impose on you and request more
than you can handle. Of Annie & Amos MAXWELL's children, I did find out

Sadie MAXWELL married Cornelius LYNCH ( I have their record) Dont know
whatever happend to Sadie, Cant find death record and their were numerous
Cornelius LYNCHes. Dont know if they ever had children.

Hattie MAXWELL married William Bellew COX (I have their record) They had 1
child, my grandmother. It was believed he died when she was a toddler, it has
since surfaced that thye split, divorced, he remarried and had 5 or more
children and didnt die til 1949, the year before I was born. I found in info and
his final resting place and also been in contact with his 2nd family.

Walter James MAXWELL married Martha Elizabeth "Lizzie" BRITTINGHAM ( I have
their record) She is related to me twice. She is a cousin to my Gr
Grandfather, father of my grandfather who married Hattie's daughter.

Harvey MAXWELL: married Nellie BRADEN. She apparently kept her name or used
it with MAXWELL. She is also buried using BRADEN and the "his wife" comment on
their stone. (I have thier records).

Joseph S. MAXWELL maried Charlotte. I dont know her maiden name and dont
have their records. I would like to find her maiden name and record.

Rachel MAXWELL, I believed died by 1900.

Naomi MAXWELL married Charles BRADLEY. I dont have their records. I would
like to, as she was close with Hattie and I would like to find what I could to
locate the BRADLEY line and any children this couple might have had. They did
eventually move to Florida where they both died (Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte,
FL a long time ago.) I dont know when they moved there, be it to retire or
as a young couple. I do remember at least in the 1950' early 1960's Naomi and
Hattie visiting together in Delaware. Dont know if Naomi still lived here
then or not.
I think Naomi's family could be the key to find out more about my family
through this line.

Elsie MAXWELL - found nothing, however there is one on Census records in the
STATE HOSPITAL. The age range is right but have no proof of this lady being
the same lady. I used to hear about change of life babies.having problems. I
think Annie was in her late 30's very early 40's when Elsie was born. I dont
know if this was a problem age for giving birth, or if the birth itself
caused problems enough to instutionalize her. So I have nothing to prove if this
Elsie is the same Elsie. I have found no other records on Elsie except a Birth
Record.

Im sorry this is so long. I am hoping that you might have the resources to
help me fill in the missing information on Marriages of AmosC. MAXWELL &
Annie E. DAVIS and maybe a maiden name for Joseph's wife Charlotte and a date of
marriage for both.

If your resources can assist me with the other information I would greatly
appreciate your help. If not, maybe someone reading this will be able to
assist me with resources they might have close at hand. Maybe someone connected
to the same family will see this and be willing to share information on this
family.

Thank your for your time and trouble.

Take care.
Vickie
