I just returned from a trip to DE/MD and visited in Snow Hill. I was amazed
at the small size of the river since I had read it was an important port. My
only conclusion was that the people used shallow draft boats to get there.
The river is probably not more than 25 feet wide. Other ports in area but
further up into DE were Lewes, famous as a home for pilots who took boats up
the river (If you saw a map of the shoals in the river it is very
understandable that they needed pilots.) Lewes eventually silted in and now
must be dredged for the ferry from NJ to come in--a beautiful town. Further
up was Leipsic, apparently a thriving port, now only about 268 live
there...an oystering port in the past--again, silted in and pretty much
abandoned. On the maps Leipsic appears far inland, somewhat like Snow Hill
does, but apparently that did not stop the river traffic at the time. Pat
