The following represents my adventure with the SMOCK/SMACK family - another
one of my lines (Egbert Smack and, please no snickering at the name). I have
made all the spellings of the surname SMACK but, before 1800, the
predominant spelling was SMOCK and sometimes very early as SMOCKE. Does
anyone have connections or comments. Accuracy not guaranteed yet as I have
just begun looking at this recently.

FIRST GENERATION

1. John SMACK was born before 1659. He died between Jan 13 1693 and Mar 23
1693 in Somerset Co., MD.1 John Smock was granted land patents in Somerset
County (now Worcester) on Dec 1 1679 and Sep 10 1684.

John Smock's will was written Jan 13 1692/3 and robated Mar 23 1692/3. In it
he mentions son Henry to get 200 acres part of "Batchelors Lott," 100 acres
part of "Yorkshire" and 200a acres of "Conveniency." He also mentions
daughters Mary and Elizabeth and wife Parthenia.

He was married to Parthenia ENNIS (daughter of William ENNIS and Margery?
(?)) before 1692. Parthenia ENNIS died after 1693. John SMACK and
Parthenia ENNIS had the following children:

SECOND GENERATION

2. Henry SMACK (John-1) was born before 1692 in Somerset Co., MD. He died

will was written on Jul 20 1740 and probated Nov 6 1747. In it, me mentions
sons John, William, Samuel, Henry and Thomas Smock along with wife

He was married to Elizabeth MORRIS? before 1718. Henry SMACK and Elizabeth
MORRIS? had the following children:

to son John Smock, the land called "Yorkshire", part of "Conveniency", part
of (unreadable title to land), 25 acres of "Partnership." To son Henry
Smock, the balance of "Partnership". Also mentions daughters Nancy Smock,
Eady Smock, Ufamy Smock. Witnesses were McKimmey Smock, Daniel Long, and

my brother Samuel Smock’s, being part of BACHELOR’S LOTT, MOUNT EPHRAIM, and
the EX. To my son Lemuel Smock, the tract on the south side of Thomas
Purnell’s plantation, part of two tracts called PURNELL’S PURCHASE, and
SMOCK’S PURCHASE. To son William Smock, the balance of the lands, aforesaid.
To son Kendall Smock, tract on the north side of William Bassett’s

9. Thomas SMACK (Henry-2, John-1) was born between 1725 and 1737 in
Somerset Co., MD.8 He died between Jan 17 1775 and Jan 30 1775 in Worcester
Co., MD.9 Not listed in the Somerset Tax Lists with father Henry to 1740
(born after 1724) - Worcester County formed in 1742. Was witness to will of
Ephraim Hestler in early 1758 (at least age 21).

Thomas Smock/Smack's will was written on Jan 17 1775 and probated on Jan 30
1775. He left James Wilson 44 acres of "Partnership." To wife Rebecca he
left his dwelling plantation which at her death or marriage was to go to son
Levi Smack. Also at the death or marriage of Rebecca, all moveable estate
was to be divided among his three children, namely, Zipporah, Isaac and Levi
Smack. He instructed to set aside 80 pounds for the purchase of a young
negro man to be the property of his wife Rebecca during her widowhood, then
he was to go to son Isaac Smack and, if Isaac died without heirs, the negro
would transfer to Zipporah. Witnesses were John Smack, McKimmey Smack, John
Pennewell (spelled Pennywell). (WoW-JW4:300,301)

Worcester Co., MD. Thomas SMACK and Rebecca (?) had the following children:

30ii.Isaac SMACK was born in 1770 in Worcester Co., MD.10 On Aug 12
1783, Isaac Smack of Thomas, age 13, is assigned guardian John Smack Sr..

Nov 10 1817 and May 12 1818 in Worcester Co., MD.4 Levice Mumford wrote her
will Nov 10 1817 and it was probated May 12 1818. Mentions her brother John
Smack and nephews Powell Smack and William Larkin Smack and niece Levisa
Jones (part illegible). Witnesses were James A. Collier, Adam Scott, James

She was married to Major MUMFORD (son of George MUMFORD). Major MUMFORD
died between Jul 28 1815 and Jan 26 1816 in Worcester Co., MD.4 Major
Mumford 28 July 1815w. 26 January 1816p. To Levicey Smock/Smack, daughter of
John Smock/Smack. To grand-daughter Comfort Mumford, daughter of John
Mumford. To grand-daughter Diligent Mumford, daughter of John Mumford. To
John Sturgis, son of John Sturgis. Friend John Sturgis, the EX. To wife
Levicey Mumford, the EX, and one-thirds. Wit; James Bowen, Littleton Bowen
and Ezekiel Wise. JBR 161. Levisiah (Levice, Visy) SMACK and Major MUMFORD
had the following children:

23. Lemuel SMACK4 (William-3, Henry-2, John-1) died between Mar 1773 and
Mar 5 1773 in Worcester Co., MD.4 Lemuel Samck, a planter. wrote his will
in Mar 1773 and it was probated on Mar 5 1773. He mentions brothers McKimmey
Smock (executor), William Smock, Kendall Smock, James Smock, Esme Smock, and
Peter Smock. To brother McKimmey Smock, the lands on the south side of the
Pocomoke River. Witnesses were William Stephen Hill, William Truitt,

MUMFORD died after 1790 in Worcester Co., MD. 1790 Census: 1-1-3 in
Worcester County, MD.

29. Levi SMACK (Thomas-3, Henry-2, John-1) was born between Aug 7 1765 and
Oct 12 1766 in Worcester Co., MD.11 He died before Feb 8 1803 in Worcester
Co., MD. On Aug 10 1779, Levi Smack is listed as orphan of Thomas Smack.
(WoOC:71) On Oct 12 1779, Levi Samck, age 13, of Thomas Smack is provided as
guardian, John Walker. Sureties provided by Thomas Purnell and Rouse
Fassitt. (Ibid:84) On Aug 8 1780, Levi Smack, over age 14, of Thomas Smack
chooses his guardian as John Walker. Sureties by John Smack Sr. and Jesse
Jones.(Ibid:124)

1790 Census: 1 male over age 16, 0 under 16 and 2 females in Worcester Co.,
MD.
1800 Census: 11010-12010 in Bogerternorton Hundred, Worcester Co., MD.

In 1803, Anadasia Smack and Samuel Porter were listed as administrators of
the estate of Levi Smack. (WoOC:100)

He was married to Andasiah CROPPER on Jan 7 1799 in Worcester Co., MD.12
