Subject: [LDR] WILLIAM FURNIS-OLIVE IVERY 1600s

I'll add to the inventory of problems posed in the recent message below by
offering some other people connected with this group via yet another
variation of the lists given, along with distinctive new spellings to widen
search parameters:

On 13 Mar 1663/4, Philip Berry/Berrer had a 600 ac tract (BERRYS LOT or
BERRERS LOT) surveyed for him on the south side of Back Creek (in Manokin),
patented on 24 Mar 1665/6 [cf. Calvert Rent Rolls, Liber 9 folio 45, item 6
and the original certificate in Patent Liber 7 f 311, patent in Liber 9 f
297]. Authorization was a warrant to Berry/Berrer for transporting
himself, Griffes [sic] Berrer, Olive Berrer, Elizabeth Berrer, Nicholas
Barnett, George Lynn, Margaret Ivery, Mary Ivery, Ann Taylor and Elizabeth
Barnett.

Servants, cousins, in-laws, stepchildren, loiterers, who knows?

[Note that this is 10 people, not 12 as would be required for 600 ac. The
discrepancy - which I just noticed - isn't addressed in the warrant basis
for the patent. It's possible that I failed to record two names, but these
warrant descriptions do contain their share of such unexplained mysteries.
Ask me about Calvert bookkeeping and my opinon of their little clerks
sometime... well, actually, don't ask.]

This probably doesn't help much, but data is data.

If anyone roots out the answer to this puzzle, please let us know. Olive
Furniss has been mentioned on the list before. Her rare given name hints
in this potpourri that she *might* have been a daughter of Olive, wife of
Philip Berry/Berrer. But I have no other *facts* on this group of
apparent fellow travelers.

Good luck!

John Lyon

We are trying to determine Olive Ivery's correct maiden name.

William Furnis, born 1635 in England, died after June 1689 in Manokin,
Somerset County, Maryland, married Olive Ivery, born about 1648 in England,

died in Somerset County. They were married 6 February 1662/63 in
Northampton, Virginia.

The book "Old Somerset of the Eastern Shore of Maryland", page 436, says,
"Barre, Philip Barre (also Berre, Bairee) in Manokin section, 1662-3 (from
Northampton Co., VA); Aug. 1662, had warrant for land for transporting
himself Olive, Elizabeth Barie, George Lane, Margaret Ivery and Mary
Ivery."

Page 473-74, land warrants were recorded 12 August 1662 and included the
following:
"Edward Southern and wife Mary; Wm. Jones, Michael and Thos. Williams,
orphans; Phillip Bairee for himself, wife Olive, Geo. Lane, Margaret and
Mary
Ivory and Elizabeth Bairie; Wm. Furnish for himself and wife Olive; Roger
Wolford and Owen Macah for themselves,..."

Was Olive an Ivery or a Lane? Can anyone help us find the answer to this?

All help appreciated.
