<<"Parking" at the Washington D.C. National Archives.>>
Great story, Marie!
The Navy Memorial is across Pennsylvania Ave. from the researcher's entrance.
Behind the Memorial bldgs., parallel to Pa. Ave., is D St. NW which dead
ends at the FBI bldg & 9th St. NW. There is an underground parking garage at
the corner of D St. and 9th Street. We often park there when using the
Archives if we don't want to run down to 'dime' the meter every two hours
(after checking the tires for chalk marks). Last year all day parking cost
$12.75. If this is full, more parking can be found two blocks further north
on 9th. St. (outside lots).
We want to spend as much time as possible aggravating our failing sight so
buy a hot dog and soda at one of the vendors on 3 sides of the Archives
building rather than waste time at a sit-down eatery, two of which are
located in the basement of the Archives and across Pa. Ave. in the Navy
Memorial Bldg.
For those who hate to wait in lines, and you are in relatively good health,
here's a tip if you find yourself at the Archives prior to opening at 8:45
a.m. and there is a crowd waiting to get in: don't use the elevator. When
the guards permit entry, go to the stairs on either side of the elevators and
walk up 4 looooooong flights of stairs. You are guaranteed to be first in
line at the sign-in desk outside the microfilm room on the 4th floor. (You
may be sucking air for awhile!) This is how we got to be first into the
microfilm room when the 1920 census became available in 1992 while dozens of
people waited for the elevator. But there was a 2 hour limit because of the
crush. After your two hours are up you must resign for a reader and wait in
the 4th floor lobby. The very helpful staff is pretty efficient at
monitoring the time limit.
>From time to time a census microfilm may be unreadable. Keep the roll on
your reader and have a staff member look at it. The staff person will fill
out a slip which, when taken to the 2nd floor Central Research Room, will
give you access to the original census volume. You will have to obtain a
Researcher's card prior to admission to the 2nd floor Research Room which is
easy to do. You will also have to put all of your belongings, papers
included, into free lockers outside this room. We were permitted to take only
a couple of sheets of notes into the Research Room.
Using the subway--Metro--is not an option for us because we do not travel
light!
