Robyn,
I can tell you that old microfilms of the Worcester County papers, which I
have look briefly through at the Worc Co Library, usually contained at
least one, if not more ads from slave traders looking to buy. These papers
date to the 1820s and 30s but few issues have survived. Almost every
surviving one however seems to have these ads. They seem to have run for
many issues, sort of a "standing display ad" and probably can be found in
every Maryland paper during this time.
You could also try the Maryland Gazette, which dates back even further
(1770 and later?) and should be available on microfilm *somewhere*.
Presumably the traders were buying north and selling south.
As far as people in Delmarva buying, it would seem that a trip to Virginia
would not have been too hard. River access to the area would have been up
the Nanticoke and Pocomoke (former river up into Delaware for substantial
ships).
My 2c.
