Hi All.

Here is a list of states from the American Indian/Alaskan
Native Heitage by: Ms Christal Pagan American Indian/
Alaskan Native Employment Program Manager. Some
of you may have this.

ALABAMA: from "Alibamu" which is Muskogen and means
those who clear land for agriculture purpose.

ARIZONA: from "Arizonae" which is Papago and means "small springs"

ARKANSAS: from "Arkansea" the name of a tribe and it means
"downstream people"

CONNECTICUT: means "river whose water is driven by tides or wind".

DAKOTA (NORTH AND SOUTH) is Sioux and means "allies"

IDAHO: is Shosone and means "sun coming over the mountains:.

ILLINOIS: the name of a confederacy of Algonquian tribes;
it means "men"

Iowa: the name from the tribe; it means "sleepy ones".

KENTUCKY: derived from the word "Kenta" which means
"field or meadow."

MASSACHUSETTE: the name of an Algonquian tribe;
it means "at or about the great hill."

MICHIGAN: from the word "Michigamea" which means
"great water."

MINNESOTA: a Dakota word meaning "sky tinted water."

MISSISSIPPI: Algonquian words "misi" and "sipi" meaning
"great water."

MISSOURI: the name of a tribe which means "great muddy."

NEBRASKA: from an Oto word meaning "broad water."

NEW MEXICO: another name of the Aztec God "Meritili."

OHIO: an Iroquios word meaning "beautiful river."

OKLAHOMA: a Choctaw word meaning "red people."

OREGON: birch-bark dish, native name of the Colunbia River."

TENNESSEE: the name oa a Cherokee settlement;
the mean is unknown.

Texas: the name of a group of tribes, which means "firends or allies."

UTAH: the tribal name of the Ute.

WISCONSIN: the name of a group of tribes in the north central US.
