Part 2

IoW Record Office
iwight.com/library/record_office/default.asp

I have visted the Newport Office once a couple of years ago and found that
some individuals in the past have produced a Card Index (1539 - 1900) the
Parish records which are organised by name and by date. It takes up many
cabinets in their search room. The point is that a request to search a
record
office's parish records for a name and approx. date would normally be an
unreasonable request but using the Card Index it can be quite easy to find
the Index information.
So if you can find SKS who visits Newport Office it can be quite simple for
them to find it and transcribe the information (see IoW FHS site for
helpers).
Someone more familiar with the Record Office may wish to correct/clarify my
comment.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phillimores Hampshire marriage registers (Published 1900)
15 volumes in zip file format for downloading (dates to 1812).
This is only a partial set for Hampshire (not all parishes)
genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HAM/church.html (bottom of page)
IoW volumes:
Vol.12 BRADING,CALBOURNE, FRESHWATER, NITON,
WHITWELL (to 1837) and YAVERLAND
Vol.14 NEWPORT (to 1837)
You can search and play with the information offline.
Note: before downloading I suggest you create 'meaningful' folder/s to put
them in and a master folder easily aceesible for using the Windows search
function.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Online lookup of GRO Births, Marriage and Deaths (1837-1900+ ongoing)
IoW can be specified as a Registration District
freebmd.rootsweb.com/
This is an ongoing activity so a hit is not guarenteed, check the coverage
charts and it is worth retrying every couple of months.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Free Census (1841-71 & 91)
freecen.rootsweb.com/
Currently low coverage but ongoing activity.
No IoW but you may be lucky and hit a stray.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Access to Archive (A2A)
a2a.org.uk
Catalogue of data held in various Record Offices and Archive Centres, it's
an ongoing activity but a lot has already been done. You can search the
whole catalogue or selected sources, this includes 'Isle of Wight Record
Office' which can be selected but you should also try 'Hampshire Record
Office' as this also includes IoW records.
Try putting in names and keywords, you never know your luck, if you get too
many hits look at the different search options.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hampshire Record Office
For those able to visit it may be a lot easier than Newport and it contains
quite a lot of IoW information. The Record Office is situated around 200
yards from Winchester Mainline Railway Station.
hants.gov.uk/record-office/

The Office has the following IoW material (that I have found):
Film or Fiche of IoW Census 1841, 51, 61, 71 and 1891
Various Hampshire FHS data including 1851 Census Index
Philmore Marriages Transcript (I think hardcopy of the above online
versions)
Transcripts of the following IoW parishes (some only partial):
Yarmouth (seems complete to c1810)
Binstead
Brooke
Godshill (burials 1678-1715)
Kingston
Newchurch & Ryde
Newchurch (BT)
Shalfleet (marriages 1604-1812)
Shorwell
Thorley (CMB 1614-1765 all 3)

Also you should be able to view any documents found in HRO A2A.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Partial transciption of Yarmouth Parish Record
I have made a transcription (from a typed transcript at HRO) of those
surnames of interest to me: WARDER, DORE, BAKER, DOWDNEY,
HATTON(1 entry), COOMBES, DYER(2), NICHOLES(1),
WOODNET(1) and WOODNUTT(2), including variants
(Dowdney & Coombes have a lot of variation), they cover the period
c1620 to c1810.
There are about 300 entries in MS Excel format (so that the entries can be
sorted) but could be saved in text format (can't sort!).
I am happy to send a copy on request (state format required xls or txt).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other Notes:
I have found that the West of the Island (Yarmouth, Freshwater) is quite
strong Protestant (incl Weslyan) and you may find the odd
marriage/baptism in London (Paternoster Row - Weslyan).
Possibly true for other parts of the Island but I
don't have any specific knowledge.
