Subject: Research sources for IoW (part 1)
Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 19:27:47 +0100

I joined the list a few months ago and have been able to get some very
useful information for my research (thanks Michele Cantwell).
However I noticed that a number of 'listers' are not familiar with some of
the sources of information available to them which covers the IoW. I have
listed below some of the sites/sources that I use researching IoW,
apologies for some of the more obvious ones
(teaching grandma to suck eggs!).
Hope some of it is of use to you.
Due to size there are 2 parts to this note.

Firstly the warnings and disclaimers
Most of the following are transcriptions so the usual warnings apply about
verifying the information. Having seen many source images, differences in
transcription data (from the same source) can be based on different
interpretations of the data.

From the 1700s back the UK year ran from April to March, therefore dates
in Jan to March can easily be one year out. Often both years are given
e.g. 1 Jan 1698/99 is 1 Jan 1699 by todays calendar.

IGI - this can be an extremely useful tool but does contain data submitted
by individual members which must be treated with great care. Data Batches
starting with 'C' (christenings), 'M' (marriages) and some other alpha
characters I have found to be very good/accurate.
Submitted by member data I tend to discard unless a specific date and
location is given i.e. the source information was probably seen. Use of
'about', christenings/marriages 20 years apart and christenings/marriages
in the same location (without complete dates) are usually just guesswork.

1881 Census available online
Available on the LDS site - see IGI site below.

IoW Family History Society website:

IoW online Births, Marriages Deaths (ongoing development)
Note (for non-UK): NC (non-conformist) or RO (Registry Office) are either
civil marriages (in the Registry Office) or non-Church of England (NC).
Church of England clergy were allowed to register marriages other
denominations required the presence of a registrar or had to go to
the Registry Office.

Hants Genealogy Society (HGS) website:
hgs-online.org.uk/
Little IoW (does have 1851 Census Index) but I'm a member so I should
plug it.

IGI online at:
familysearch.org/Eng/
(then click the search tab, and then IGI tab on the next page)

List of Parishes (by county) available in the IGI with dates ranges.

This is very useful enabling you to specify the Batch number
which can be used for children search by Batch/Parish.
Note: be careful of those not prefixed by 'C' or 'M' see warning above.
I found the following Batchs not listed (there's certainly more):

C022159 Yarmouth (1814-58, 338 entries, females only)
C166551 Freshwater (1572-1888, 1350 entries, females only)
C166801 Yarmouth (1614-1858, 592 entries, females only)
C059992 Gatcombe (1560-1880, 812 entries, females only)
C166512 Chale (1813-66, 311 entris, females only)
C166511 Chale (1679-1812, 825 entries)
C005240 Ventnor (532 entries)
C166621 Ryde (2500+ entries)
7820230 (submitted by LDS members but incls 25 Freshwater entries)
7035112 (submitted by LDS members but incls 117 Freshwater entries)

Note: if using parent/child search use both parents and then retry with
father only as many earlier entries just specified the father.
If you find others, it's worth changing the batch prefix i.e. C to M or
visa versa to see if the other exists.
I have no idea as to why some are female entries only!
