Dear All,
Following the recent discussion of the COOPER family in the IoW, I thought
that I might add my own little puzzle:
My gt gt gt grandfather was CHARLES OSBORN who was born 1777, died 30/9/1846
at Arreton. In 1797 he married JANE WHITTINGTON who was born at Brook and
died 1855.
I would be very interested to learn more of the parents of this Charles
OSBORN. With the help of David Collier I have a hypothesis that his parents
were CHARLES OSBORN and MARTHA COOPER who married in Arreton in 1776. David
tells me that there is no plausible birth of a Martha COOPER and suggests
that she may have been the widow of ROBERT COOPER whom she married in
15/7/1761 at Arreton. ROBERT COOPER could have died at Binstead 30/8/1767 or
16/3/1775. In this case, Martha's maiden name would have been GAWN.
The puzzle deepens a little with the will of my gt gt gt grandfather Charles
Osborn which is dated 29/9/1846. The testator is WILLIAM COOPER, and the
witnesses are ROBERT COOPER (Grocer of Wootton) and WILLIAM RIDGELY (Miller
of Wootton). ROBERT COOPER , born about 1797 was, in 1851 a grocer, baker
and cowkeeper. His wife was ELIZA born about 1808 at Northwood and their
children were: ROBERT born about 1836 in Arreton who worked as a "grocer's
son", and Edward born about 1845 in Arreton. Could the testator, WILLIAM
COOPER have been the brother in law of MARTHA?
Does this shed any light (or muddy the waters)?
Very best wishes,
JOHN OSBORN
