Hi Iris,
" A friend has sent me a bit of one of your emails from the Isle of Wight
list as she recognised a name I have been searching for a long time - Eva
Cooper. But mine is a bit earlier than the one you mention. Eva Cooper was
8 months old in the 1881 census and living in Bristol with an aunt, Jane
Patten, who subsequently "adopted" her. But this Eva Cooper was my
g-grandmother and I LONG to know who she REALLY was. Jane Patten gave Eva's
birthplace as Vauxhall, London, but there is absolutely NO record of such a
birth in the area. "
I hope to be able to clarify a few more details for myself soon, as I have
found a UK site that allows me to search for Birth, Marriage & Death
certificates and get copies of it for only a small sum. The site is
www.1837online.com if you haven't found it before, hope it is useful to you.
They do charge, but only 5 English pounds for 45 days access to locate your
own certificates - then you can purchase copies through them at the going
rate. They offer better rates, if you intend to spend more days with them.
Now down to the Eva and the Ellie's. It was not an uncommon practice in the
Victorian era (in Australia - and probably also Mother England), to name
sibling children - with favourite, parental first, middle or surnames and it
is possible, that my Ellie Cooper (who was born about 1885), was born as Eva
Ellen and solve your problems. But I won't know that until I start
rummaging at the above address. My tree info to date - even though it is my
direct history, has only been from my father's memory, (the youngest son),
who left the country after WW2 at age 36 - and he may have had it all wrong.
As I've only recently linked to the Internet, I need to spend some money to
prove what he has told me - and perhaps - maybe there may be some news for
you too.
Good Luck in your search.
Regards,
Ron Cooper
