Greetings to all on the mailing list. I am a new member of the list and am
seeking information on my Isle of Wight ancestors. My
greta-great-grandfather, Thomas Deaken was born around 1836 and was from the
Isle of Wight. He had two brothers I am aware of, John and Peter. Peter had
a daughter Elizabeth who died in 1936. My great uncle paid for her funeral
and transport of her remains back to England from America for burial. He
also paid for restoration of the headstone in the cemetery where Elizabeth
and her family were buried. From a picture of the headstone I have the
following information: Peter died on Dec. 13, 1882. He was married to
Elizabeth who died on May 16, 1908. They had the following children: John
born c. 1857, died Oct. 18, 1874; Catherine born c. 1853, died may 30, 1905;
Lewis born c. 1852, died July 3, 1900 and Elizabeth born c. 1858, died Feb.
22, 1936. Elizabeth married a Capt. Jonathan Watson who was born c. 1850 and
died Dec 18, 1898. They had a son J. Sidney born c. 1890, died Feb 18, 1910.
All of the above are buried together in Whitehaven Old Cemetery. When Peter
moved from Isle of Wight to Whitehaven, I do not know. Peter spelled his
last name Dehan, while my g-g-grandfather, Thomas and his brother John
spelled it Deaken. Which was the original spelling I do not know. Perhaps
when John and Thomas came to America the spelling was changed. I would be
very greatful for any information anyone might have on the Dehan/Deaken
family from the Isle of Wight.
