In my long ago childhood (1920's) on an Iowa farm, we didn't have a maid. She was a "hired girl." I am sure she was from a neighboring farm but have no idea which one. I do know that before my fathers marriage, his niece, whose parents lived nearby, cleaned house for him. Apparently this was not such an easy job after he adopted a nest of orphaned squirrels/ Helene in picture perfect Texas
