Subject: [IOWA] age of marriage
Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 16:56:23 EST
I was suprised to find that I am so far the youngest marriage in any of my
family lines as far back as I have traced them.(to the 1700s.) I married at
19. The information I have collected about my family indicates that parents
and guardians had a major say in when a person could marry, go the the US, or
even what that person would do for a profession. Most of my lines, we are
talking dozens of people, married (first marriage) between the ages of about
22 to 25. This could have something to do with tradition in the countrys of
origin. My people came from Scotland/Ireland/England/Germany, and some were
Danish.
Another thing that could make a difference on when it was acceptable to marry
would be what was accepted in whatever particular part of the country (US)
they settled in. I know that varies. Joan
