How Mistakes Are Made

Since the appearance of the new telephone call book there has been a great deal of trouble caused in getting the wrong number, but the errors are not to be laid to the blame of the “hello girls” at the exchange. When the new book was issued not only the ‘phone number of each patron was given, but the street address was also placed in the book opposite each name and this is the cause of so many mistakes. A great many subscribers will call for the street address number instead of the ‘phone number. For example, if John Smith’s ‘phone number is 500 and if he lives at 442 south Washington street many persons will asks the exchange operator for the number 442, which of course is not the number they want. Dozens of mistakes from this cause have occurred everyday since the new book had been distributed, and the fault of course is with the person using the ‘phone.
