Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Saturday Courier, Jul 6, 1889, no page
noted, clipping file, Monroe County Historical Society.

John McCune, a brakeman on the L. N. A. & C. was killed by falling from the
tender of the locomotive of the early freight train north Thursday morning a
short time after leaving here. The fall crushed his skull, and he died a few
moments after being brought to the Webster house in this city. That very
morning he had been talking to a fellow brakeman saying that anyone who didn't
want to get hurt ought to keep from railroading. The deceased was a young
man, and his home was at Crawfordsville. His relatives came down from that
city in the evening, and the body was taken home, It is said he was engaged
to be married July 4th to a Miss McCabe.
