Our Harrodsburg Correspondent gives, as a rumor, the information that Carmichael & Urmey pork packers of that place have gone into bankruptcy. Reports current here leave no doubt but what they have had their papers prepared at Bedford and will be adjudged bankrupts. Mr. J.D. Urmey was one of the leading merchants of the county, his store at Harrodsburg selling as many goods as any store in the county. He has always enjoyed the utmost confidence of the people and was considered one of our best and most solid men. The failure it is said, was caused by a heavy loss on pork this season, the loss being about $35,000., or $7 each on 5,000 head of hogs. Pork declined with this much on their hands, and as a new packing season is approaching and as there was no longer any hope an advance on the pork on hand they had to succumb to the inevitable their papers could not be met, and they were compelled to meet their fate. Their liabilities are given as $80,000 to $100,000. Among!
the
heavy losers by the failure, we learn are E.M. Oliphant, who will lose about $14,000 and Jacob Tague, who will lose about as much. This failure will be a disastrous blow to the business interests of the Southern portion of the county and Messrs Carmichael & Urmey, no doubt deserve the sympathy of their fellow citizens in this the hour of their adversity.
