Here's more that followed on the divorce and remarriage of John and Sarah
SKINNER:
Bloomington (IN) Republican Progress, Mar. 30, 1892, p. 3
Jno. R. Skinner was given a divorce in circuit court last week, on a charge
against his wife, sarah Skinner, alleging cruel treatment. Mrs. Skinner was
awarded the interest they held in a piece of property that was being paid for
through the building association, and Skinner was permitted to get his clothes
away from the house if he was willing to take the risk.
in the Spencer Democrat Newspaper 7 Apr 1892 this article appeared:
The Bloomington Courier gives the following concerning the divorce
proceedings of John R. Skinner vs. Sarah E. Skinner, who moved from Spencer to
Bloomington about one year ago:
Another interesting divorce case was that of John R. Skinner vs. Sarah E.
Skinner. The parties were married in Greene County in 1866, and moved to
Bloomington from Spencer about a year ago. In his complaint John said that he was
feeble and in delicate health, and subsists almost entirely upon his pension.
The defendant is guilty of cruel and inhuman treatment of him; that she
strikes him with her fist, and sticks of wood, curses and abuses him with foul and
inhuman language, threatens his life, wishes him dead, that she could see him
tortured to death by inches; that his home has become a hell and he is driven
from it to save his life. His wife is a large and very stout women and is the
superior of him in strength, and that he is placed in fear of his life. But
the defendant came in with a cross complaint. She charged John with being a
habitual drunkard, and denied the allegations in his complaint, and defies the
allegator. The Judge Miers believed her side of the story and granted her a
divorce and the household goods. Thus John lost his wife, but hangs on to his
pension.
