BARTON ACUFF DIED
Passing Away of Old Citizen and Mexican Veteran

Barton Acuff, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Monroe County, is dead.

The end came peacefully and quietly at 10 o'clock Wednesday at his home one mile north of Ellettsville after a lingering illness. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis, but his illness began last October shortly after the death of his wife. It began with a gradual decline and continued until about five weeks ago when he suffered a stroke of paralysis, from the effects of which he never rallied. With his death the county loses one of its best citizens, the community a good neighbor, and the children a kind father.

Barton Acuff was 79 years of age and a native of Tennessee, having emigrated to Monroe County when a young man. He was the father of eight children, all of whom are living. They are: Emma, Laura and Belle Acuff, Mrs. Chambers, Mrs. Henry Corr, Thomas Acuff, Mrs. Lizzie Ridge and Warren Acuff.

He was a soldier in the Mexican war and served as a member of the 3rd Indiana regiment. He was a charter member of the Ellettsville lodge of Masons, the first worshipful master of the order, and was one of the oldest Mason's in Monroe County. He has been a lifelong Democrat but was conservative in all his political actions. For a number of terms he was assessor of Richland Townships and in 1870 was a candidate for treasurer of Monroe County against I. Milton Rogers but was defeated. Mr. Acuff was a man without any enemy and was loved and respected by all classes.
