Frank Todd Shot By Clinton Hovious

Former Fire Department Chief Victim of Bullet From 38 Calibre Revolver

While at his home with his wife on north Grant street at ten oclock last night, Frank Todd, former chief of the Bloomington fire department was probably fatally shot with a 38 calibre revolver by Clinton Hovious, assistant driver of the fire department. Todd was removed in the Harrel ambulance to the Bloomington hospital where a probe was made for the bullet by Dr. Frank Holland and Otto Rogers. Todds condition is very serious and his recovery is doubtful.

Hovious had been excused from duty at the fire department to act as special policeman during the two regimental days. He went to the Todd home last night wearing his star and with his billie in his hand. It is said that he struck Todd a lick over the head before shooting him. A quarrel was started which led up to the shooting. During the melee it is said Hovious was slashed with a knife.

Mrs. Todd is the former wife of Hovious but he has been divorced from her several months. The quarrel, it is said was over Mrs. Todd.

There were no eyewitnesses to the tradegy(sic) except Mrs. Todd. After the quarrel had started she sent for the police. Alva Parks who was also serving as an extra policeman, was the first to arrive and when he got there Hovious was sitting on a bed with fun in one hand and billie in the other.

The police officers took Hovious to jail after disarming him and Todd was rushed to the hospital. He was shot in the abdomen, the bullet riddling his intestines.

Todd was not unconscious after the shooting and talked of it to chief Hensley. This morning he also talked to Lonnie Johns. Although he was resting easy early this morning, little hope was held out for his recovery.

Hovious will not be arraigned until after the outcome of Todds bullet wound is known.

Prosecutor William M. Louden visited Todd at the hospital this morning and took his ante-mortem statement which in substance was as follows:

"My wife and I were about ready to retire when we heard a knock at the front door. When I opened the door there stood Hovious with his policemans mace in one hand and the gun leveled at me. He uttered and oath and said: Ive come down here to kill you. I grabbed him by the wrists and turning to my wife told her to run and call a policeman. While I was trying to hold him he kept twisting the fun about until it was pointed over my abdomen when he pulled the trigger. After he had shot me he said, Now Ive done what I said I would. He then hit me over the head with the mace and I got it out of his hand and struck him over the head with it.
