MRS. MARY UMBARGER

Editors WORLD COURIER. Mrs. Mary Umbarger, who died on November 23rd, was one of the oldest and most respected women in Monroe County. She died at the advanced age of 91 years and was a lifelong member of the Missionary Baptist Church and lived and died a mother in Israel. She was the sister of George H. Johnson who at one time represented Monroe County in the Legislature. They were born in Wythe County, Virginia, and emigrated to Monroe County in 1844 and resided in the Harmony neighborhood.

Mrs. Umbarger was the mother of Mrs. Richard Gentry and the grandmother of the famous showmen, the Gentry Brothers. She was always proud of her children and grandchildren, and they have honored themselves in honoring her. The old settlers of Monroe County are rapidly passing away, and the memory of these hardy pioneers who endured the hardships of a new settlement should be ever respected and revered by their posterity.

Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Roseberry.
