Mrs. Sarah Hathaway of Van Buren Township, this county, widow of the late
Joseph Hathaway and whose maiden name was Vankirk, was born in Knox County
in 1799. She lived three years in a fort at Vincennes where fathers, sons,
brothers and husbands worked and stood guard to protect their families from
the Indians. Mrs. Hathaway is now 77 years of age and has been a resident
of Van Buren Township for 44 years. If there are any other resident
Hoosiers older than she the public would probably be interested to know who
they are. Let us hear from some of the out townships.
