Debra,

I have reviewed my Steele file to determine if there were any references to
Evans or Taylors. There were two: James Armstrong Steele had a son,
Samuel, who married Harriet Evans and settled in Waveland, Indiana; James'
brother, Jesse, who married Jane Young Fain, had a daughter, Elizabeth who
married a James Taylor and moved to Iowa about 1845. (See STEELE FAMILY
by Daniel Steele Durrie, 1862, p. 158-9.)

I also found a reference to Sloan Steele in FACT AND FOLKLORE OF OWEN
COUNTY (INDIANA), Vol. II, by Dixie Kline Richardson quoting Alice Milligan
whose father came as a missionary to the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Owen
County, Indiana, in 1853 (see pages 57-58). She recalled some of the older
members of the church: "Of the Tennessee group the king-bolt was Sloan
Steele, father of six sons and three daughters who lived to grow up...His
widow, Margaret Nail Steele held her family together with strength and
dignity..."

John Snoddy, who is buried in the cemetery with Ninian Steele, was the son
of Samuel and Elizabeth (Sloan) Snoddy. I really have a gut feeling that
the Snoddy and Steele families are closely related. I'm filing these
papers away and will do some more research as time permits.
