Shields Cem is somewhere on my list of cemeteries to visit. I'll get there as soon as I can. A lot of these records date back to a WPA project, as I recall, and there are some errors.

Larry,

I took some time this morning to pull my file on James M. Snoddy, my
husband's ancestor, to review any information as it pertains to a date of
death. My file includes a picture of James' tombstone but, unfortunately,
not a very good one. I can see the names of James, his wife and three
children noted on the stone. The years of birth and death show clearly for
the three children. Their names appear under the names of the parents who
are noted at the top of the stone, the mother on the left and the father on
the right.

Margaret's information is totally in a shadow on the left under the word,
"Mother," I presume. The only visible year is 1880; another date,
undoubtedly the year of birth, seems to be in the shadows to the left. I
have not been able to corroborate 1880 as the date of death, but I did find
her in the 1880 census record, and it was noted there that she was ill with
consumption.

James' name is on the right under the word, "Father." The only date
under the name is 1843, the presumed year of birth. There is a raised,
blank oblong to the right of the birth date to provide a place where a date
of death could be carved later.

I have several pieces of evidence that James was still living after
1880. In fact, I have a copy of a legal record that he signed in 1909
pursuant to receiving a military pension in connection with his experience
in the Civil War. (That document was signed with an "X," and James never
received a pension because it was never proven that he actually served in
the Civil War.)

Sometime after filing for his pension, James went to live with his son,
John Francis "Frank" Snoddy in Oakland, Illinois. According to his obit,
he later died in Oakland The body was returned to Bloomington for burial
in the Shields Cemetery. Allen and Allen Funeral Home handled the burial
arrangements. The obits that I have for him appeared in: (1) the
Bloomington (IN) Evening World dated March 6, 1922, p. 1. c. 4.; (2)
Bloomington (IN) Evening World, Mar 7, 1922, p. 1, c. 6; and (3)
Bloomington (IN) Telephone, Mar 6, 1922, p. 4, c. 5. Four sons, whose
names I recognize from other records as the children of James and Margaret
(Payne) Snoddy, were mentioned as survivors.

Based upon the information as I have presented it above, I hope that a
correction with be made in the cemetery book accordingly.

Randi
