COOKED THE EGGS
Over $60 of Hen Fruit and $57 Cash Fed to Flames
The little hamlet of Gabriel, in Washington Township, 16 miles north of
here suffered a disastrous conflagration early yesterday morning and the
village post office and only general store the town could boast of is now a
heap of smoking ruins. About 10 o'clock Wednesday night Adolphus Cooter,
the village merchant who does a general business, built a large fire in the
storeroom stove to keep several hundred dozen eggs he had in stock from
freezing, and locking up the store went home. About 2 o'clock in the
morning the store and contents was destroyed, fire having originated from a
defective flue. The post office was located in one end of the store and
all the mail sacks and official papers were destroyed. Coooter had a $400
stock of goods including $60 worth of eggs and $57 in cash that assisted in
feeding the flames. No insurance.
