MRS. KELLY DEAD
Woman Whose Life is Part of History of County
From Thursday's Daily:
At 8:30 o'clock this morning occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Kelly at Her
residence on East 3td Street. For many years Mrs. Kelly has been an
invalid and necessarily confined to her home. The immediate cause of her
death was heart failure, aggravated by an attack of grip which she has been
suffering from the past ten days.
Mrs. Kelly was one of the best known and highly respected ladies of
Bloomington and was a pioneer resident of Monroe County. She was 74 years
old and born in Halifax, N. S. and emigrated to this country with her
parents when she was but a mere child taking the overland route to Boston
and from there to Baltimore by boat. Later the family came via Louisville
to this city where her parents' cousins, Alexander and John Owens, then
resided. She was a cousin of Mrs. Judge Hughes who at the time resided on
Prospect Hill and where the old homestead remained for years and was only
recently town down.
In 1853 Mrs. Kelly, whose maiden name was Moore, daughter of Garrett and
Catherine Moore, was married to the late Capt.James R. Kelly, one of Monroe
County's prominent citizens and who organized the first company that left
Bloomington to participate in the Civil War. By this union three children
were born, two daughters and one son. One child is at present living and
is an unmarried daughter, Miss Mary Moore Kelly.
In her young womanhood days, Mrs. Kelly united with the Walnut Street
Presbyterian Church and to the day of her death she was a faithful and
conscientious member--a true Christian lady with malice for none and
charity for all. That was her life's motto, and she followed it
faithfully. She was a sister of Surgeon General John Moore of the U. S.
Army and also Richard Moore of Indianola, Iowa, both of whom have been
notified of their sister's demise.
The arrangements for the funeral have as yet not been completed and will be
announced later.
