HORSE GOES MAD
Result of Dog Bite and Tears Itself to Pieces
A horse belonging to Perry Chambers, a well known farmer of the east part
of the county, went mad about three weeks ago and died in horrible
agony. The animal was bitten last fall by a dog supposed to have been
affected with hydrophobia but nothing was thought of the matter afterward
as the injury healed over. About three weeks ago the horse, while fastened
in its stall, became affected with the disease and would bite itself in a
horrible manner, tearing the flesh from its side and legs. Nothing could
be done to relieve the suffering as no one dared go near it.
The horse was driven into a field where it could be alone and have the
entire freedom of the pasture. In its last days the animal suffered untold
agony and would gallop about the field snapping at every object it came in
contact with. Its frenzied neighs were pitiful to hear. Finding nothing
upon which to vent its madness, the horse began biting and tearing the
flesh from its own body wherever it could. It tore the muscles and flesh
from its forelegs, lacerated its body in a terrible manner, finally falling
exhausted to the ground from its effort at self destruction, and died in
four hours a terrible object victim of deadly hydrophobia. The animal was
valued at $150 by Mr. Chambers, and its horrible death struggles were
watched by many spectators.
