Local History Microfilm Collection Roll 18, Monroe County Public Library,
Bloomington, Indiana. Microfilmed from originals on file at the Lilly
Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. Shared with permission.

This microfilmed document is many pages long with a single phrase in script
copied over and over on a single page. On the first page of the document
it is noted that Mary Hight Legg was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on
February 3, 1821. She married William A. Legg in Bloomington, Indiana, on
December 7, 1841, and died in Shelbyville, Indiana, on April 3, 1892.

The specimens of calligraphy were complied in 1836 while Mary Hight was a
student in the Monroe County Female Institute. She received an award for
her samples. "The Institute existed from about 1824 to 1868 at which date
Indiana University opened its doors to women."
