Hi folks,
My computer has been away from me in the shop for repairs. This is the
fifth time in about six weeks. I don't know if my problems are resolved,
but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
In the absence of a computer I look toward other relevant things for Monroe
County genealogists, things I may not have seen before. One of those
things was roll number 18 from the Local History Microfilm Collection at
the Monroe County Public Library. That particular roll contained a lot of
very neat things I had not seen before that I believe to be of interest to
members of the INMONROE. However, it was noted repeated throughout the
roll that the information shown there could only be shared elsewhere with
the permission of the curator of manuscripts at the Lilly Library who held
the originals. Consequently, I met with Saundra Taylor at the Lilly
Library and, at her request, provided her with a written proposal of what I
wanted to do. She then granted me permission to share items from roll 18
in whole or in part along with documentation noting where I found copies of
given material and where originals were located. She also restricted use
of any hard copies I make from the microfilm to my personal library and
does not wish hard copies to be placed in any public library.
So during the next few months I will be sharing some things on the
INMONROE. Occasionally it may be the entire document, sometimes it will be
an abstract with an index of names, and sometimes it will be simply a
reference to a document. In the latter instance, it will be a document I
believe to be of only minimal genealogical importance. Of course, if it
was my ancestor I'd have a whole different priority and so may you.
If you see a reference to a document or a abstract of a document that you
wish to review in its entirety, I can suggest two things: visit the Monroe
County Public Library and view Local History Microfilm Collection film 18
for yourself or contact Saundra Taylor at 812-855-2452 and request
permission for a copy.
Last but not least. While I was at the Lilly Library Saundra showed me a
cards in the index file under Monroe County Indiana History
Manuscripts. They described manuscripts dated from 1812 to 1959. Many of
those cards were a brief description of items on Local History Microfilm
Collection Roll 18. Some, however, were materials undoubtedly added since
the microfilm was made in 1975. So I will be passing along the the
reference information from entire collection of index cards.
Sit back with your cup of coffee and enjoy Monroe County history brought to
you in the comfort of your home.
Randi
