Subject: [INMONROE] Monroe County, Indiana, Marriage Affidavits Books: James Harvey Gentry
Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 08:35:30 -0500
There are three books identified as Marriage Affidavits books located at
the Clerk's Office in the Justice Building at Bloomington, Indiana. The
books are located on the open shelves above the marriage record books.
Each of the books varies slightly but, essentially, contains a standardized
form for an individual to give consent for a couple to obtain a marriage
license. In some cases, the form is superceded by a letter or note of
permission written to the Clerk of the Court in which case the letter or
note is generally pasted over the standardized form. The earliest book is
unnumbered; it contains affidavits from 1871 to 1887. The next book,
identified as Book 1, covers the period 1896 to 1901; the last book,
identified as Book 2, covers the period 1896 to 1907.
The books are not well indexed and seem quite inconsistent. For example,
there may be twenty blank forms interspersed with two completed forms. In
the event that information is shared from a given book or page on the
INMONROE list and a copy of the original is desired, contact Marilyn McCoy
at 812-329-2600.
