HINKLE ON THE ROAD HOME
Homesick Boy Accompanies Sheriff without Requisition Papers

Special to the Telephone from Poplar Bluff Republican--Poplar Bluff,
Missouri, December 5. "Harvey Hinkle, confessed murderer of John
McClintock, left here this morning in custody of Sheriff Joe Ratliff for
Bloomington. The two went from here to St. Louis and from there, the
Sheriff told the officers here, the Big Four will be taken east to
Greencastle and then the Monon to Bloomington, arriving there tonight or
early tomorrow morning.

"Sheriff Ratliff arrived here withoout any requisition papers, but Hinkle
saved complications that would have taken several days to unravel by
announcing that he was willing to go back to Indiana without the necessary
papers. The homesick boy wanted to get back to his home and friends,
notwithstanding the price he pays will be to face trial for the
first-degree murder. Any fears he may have for the future area forced out
of his mindi by this homesickness and he seems to think little about and
taalks in a perfectly cool manner of the crime."

-----------------------------

From the timetables, the Sheriff and his prisoner will arrive home on
either the midnight train or the 3:30 in the morning. They got to St.
Louis about 11 AM, too late to catch the morning trains east. The first
train east they can catch leaves at 1:40 this afternoon on the B & C and
arrives at Mitchell at 6:14. By taking this they will catch the midnight
train into Bloomington. On the Big Four the train leaves at 8 o'clock this
morning and goes to Greencastle in time to make connections with the 3:30
Monon train.
