Bloomington (IN) Weekly courier, May 27,l 1882, p. 3.
The remains of Mrs. Mary Cronard (sic) arrived here Wednesday and were
deposited in the city cemetery. In giving the cause of her death, a
dispatch from Lafayette to the Indianapolis Journal says: "A horrible
accident occurred this morning on the New Albany road about one mile north
of town. At 8:30 A. M. a special train was made up in this city on which a
number of the officials of the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago road took
passage. When the train had reached the point above named and was going
through a cut, a woman suddenly appeared on the track, driving a horse into
pasture. Before the engine could be stopped, the train struck the woman
killing her instantly. The victim was Mrs. Mary Cronand (sic), aged about
55 years, and was the mother of the fireman of the train. When the son
discovered that it was his mother who had been killed, he became almost
distracted with grief and was unable to attend to his work. Coroner
Bensley held an inquest about noon and rendered a verdict in accordance
with the above facts.
