Bloomington (IN) Republican Progress, April 9, 1890, Pg. 3

One day last week Maj. Owen, our efficient and vigilant City Marshal, did
some neat detective work when he secured the arrest of five young colored
boys, ranging in age from 15 to 17 years, who have been doing considerable
petty pilfering recently. The grocery store of Peter Martin, north side
of
the square, has been entered a number of times and knives, razors, cigars,
etc.,
abstracted. Suspicion fell upon one or two boys, and Owen worked up the
clew
till he arrested a brace of the fellows with the stolen property on their
persons.
He then "squeezed the cullies" - believe that's the slang - till he
secured proof
as to the complicity of three others; the result is that he now has in
jail Chas.
Dunham jr., George Hill, Steve White, Ed. Jones, and Fred. Johnson. The
boys
ought to be sent to the Reform School at once, if possible, and save the
county
the expense of keeping them in jail till the September term of court.
