"SPUNK" JONES HAS NO LAWYER
Negro Will Be Defended by County Attorney at Bedford
"Spunk" Jones, the negro who killed Al Stephens, the night lunch wagon man,
last October, is yet without a lawyer. The trial of Jones is to be held at
Bedford next week. Yesterday's Bedford Democrat says;
"Judge R. W. Miers, of Bloomington, was in the city today attending to
business in court. Judge Miers said that he will not defend "Spunk" Jones,
the Bloomington negro whose trial for the murder of Alva Stephens, a few
months ago, is set for January 8. Miers & Corr were employed at the
preliminary hearing and it was understood that they would defend Jones in
his trial if the fee was forthcoming. Jones has no money himself, but his
father and brother have a little property, and it was believed they would
sacrifice it in 'Spunk's' behalf, but they have failed to do so and Miers &
Corr have dropped out of the case. It is probably up to J. W. Harris, the
attorney for the poor, to defend Jones."
