Bob,

According to he Owen County Cemetery Index, a Martha McCollum died in Owen
County, Indiana, on May 16, 1876. She was 66 years and 7 months old at the
time of her death. This probably isn't the sister of James, but may well
be some relation, maybe even the mother of James and Martha. She was
buried in the Dutch Bethel Cemetery in Jefferson Township. There is no
indication in the index that your James died in Owen County. According to
he evidence you have, when was he last is Owen County.

I suggest you get in touch with Tammy Carney at the Spencer-Owen Public
Library. Her e-mail is . Ask her to copy the entire
McCollum family file for you. If, when you receive the material, there is
no indication of when or where James McCollum died, ask if she will check
other sources to see if she can determine a date of death.

When you are doing your research, please keep in mind that Gosport is on
the border of Putnam County and some records may be there rather than Owen.

As for what happened to Martha, I suggest you search for her in the 1850
census in the same area as James was located that year. Also check the
marriage records for that county and adjacent counties.

As for Mr. Brown. Well, yes, he may be related, but I think you would be
spinning your wheels to pursue this unless your efforts to work backwards
from what you do know meets with total failure. Besides that, working such
a common name as Brown is no small task.

If all else fails and you still want to know, contact me privately. I live
in Owen County and maybe I can assist you.
