Obituary of William Deckard
September 15, 1836 - August 8, 1908
William Deckard was born September 15, 1836 and was married to Nancy
Elizabeth Lucas, February 1, 1862. To them was born 12 children, five boys
and seven girls of which number, six are dead. The living are Mrs. John
(Elmira Jane) Allen, Pete Deckard, Mrs. George (Alice) Miller, John, Oscar,
and Isaac Deckard, all of whom reside in this county. The deceased enlisted
from Lawrence County, Ind. August 20, 1862 and mustered into U.S. Service at
Madison, Indiana on September 5, 1862 as a private of co. F, 83rd Reg. Ind.
Vol. Inf. under Capt. S. J. Bartlett and Col. D. C. Thomas to serve 3 years
during the war. The regiment was assigned to Tutles division 16 and 15
corps. Army of the Tennessee and he participated in the following
engagements: Jackson, Miss. May 14, 1863, Seige of Vicksburg, May 18 to July
4; Siege of Jackson, July 9 to 16; Brownsville, October 17; Brices Cross
Roads, June 10, 1864; Harrisburg, June 15; Tallahatchie River, August 7 to 9;
Nashville Tenn., December 15 to 16th pursued the enemy to the Tennessee River
then moved by transports to Eastport, Miss.; afterwards embarked on
transports sailing up the Fish River to Danby's Mills, Ala. taking part in
the Siege of Mobile, including Fort Blakely and Spanish Fort, march 28 to
April 9, 1865. He was wounded in the foot during the Siege of Vicksburg; was
in the hospital at New Orleans. Owing to sickness, from there he was
honorably discharged June 10, 1865 on account of disability, having taken
part in ever battle of his regiment and the war being over, he returned to
this county and resided here. He united with the Methodist church when about
20 years of age and then about 8 years ago united with the Christian church
and lived a faithful Christian life.

Death of an Old Soldier
William Deckard, east of Smithville, and aged 73 died at eleven o'clock this
morning of old age and a complication of diseases. He was a soldier of the
Civil War. He leaves the following children: Peter, John, Oscar and Isaac
Deckard, Mrs. Alice Miller and Mrs. Elmira Allen. The funeral will be held
Monday.
